We would appreciate processing of the samples and a return of your findings as soon as possible.A November 6, 1980 reply from the Arizona Radiation Regulatory Agency (ARRC) states in part: “Per our conversation on November 4, 1980, pertaining to samples collected by your department to be analyzed by our laboratory, this agency will try to furnish you with results by the end of December, 1980.” (84)The final referenced document is an Arizona Game and Fish Dept. handwritten note dated 4/13/81 which documents a phone call to the ARRC which states: “stated will analyze other samples.” (84) The requested test results were never provided. Almost 4 years later, on January 3, 1985, Bud Bristow, then Director of the Arizona Game and Fish Dept. sent a letter to Henry Koffler, President of the University of Arizona. (84)The letter is as follows: “I read with some interest an article in The Arizona Daily Star appearing on December 5, 1984 regarding the burial of hazardous wastes at the University of Arizona’s Page Ranch near Oracle. I was not personally familiar with the Wildlife testing program referred to in the article, so I had some members of my staff review our files of scientific collecting permits. Unfortunately, they were unable to provide me with any information since permit records are filed by permittee name. I would be interested in the name of the person who will be doing the wildlife testing on behalf of the University and in the species and numbers to be collected. Arizona Revised Statutes require the issuance of an appropriate license or permit prior to taking wildlife and have provided for a special permit for taking wildlife for scientific purposes.
